It has been more than two months since the start of community quarantine in the Philippines. It started in Metro Manila under ECQ or Enhanced Community Quarantine where only the necessary industries are allowed to operate. Even most government offices only work in skeletal workforce as to control the spreading on the Covid-19 virus.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue has set an annual due date every 15th of April every year for filing of Income Tax Returns. Considering the public health emergency and limitations under the ECQ, the BIR adhered to the people’s plea to extend the deadline on tax filings.

“The defined extended due dates under Section 2 of RR No. 11-2020 shall remain in effect regardless of any extension or modification of quarantine. In view of that, taxpayers are reminded to file their tax returns/pay taxes on or before the deadlines specified under Section 2 of RR No. 11-2020.

The extension of due dates shall be made applicable throughout the Philippines.

Taxpayers are likewise reminded that if they file their tax returns within the original deadline or prior to the extended deadline, they can amend their tax returns at any time on or before the extended due date. An amendment that will result in additional tax to be paid can still be paid without the imposition of corresponding penalties (surcharge, interest and compromise penalties) if the same shall be done not later than the extended deadline, as provided under existing rules and regulations.

A taxpayer whose amended tax returns will result in overpayment of taxes paid can opt to carry over the overpaid tax as credit against the tax due for the same.”

To avoid paying penalty fees for late filing of income tax, everyone is urged to use online filing by using the BIR eBIRForms and eFPS Facilities. It’s easy to use at the comforts of your own home. You can pay your taxes by using ePayment Facilities. For eFPS filers, payment of taxes can be made through an authorized agent bank (AAB) of the BIR where the taxpayer is registered.

For non-eFPS filers, you can use other online payment facilities such as:

  1. LandBank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) Link.Piz Portal (for taxpayers who have an ATM account with the bank and/or for holders of Bancnet ATM/Debit/Prepaid cards and taxpayers utilizing the PesoNet facility);
  1. UnionBank Online Web and Mobile Payment Facility (for taxpayers who have an account with UnionBank of the Philippines);
  1. Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) Pay Tax Online (for holders of Visa or Mastercard credit cards and/or Bancnet ATM/Debit cards issued by any bank); and
  1. Mobile payment via GCash or PayMaya.
